History of Bowen’s Wharf in Newport, RI

In the 1950's “Bowen’s Coal Wharf” was owned by George Piltz. It was here that Newporters came to purchase coal to heat their homes and businesses. In 1963 it became Aquidneck Lobster Company. At one time Aquidneck Lobster was the biggest offshore loading operation on the east coast. Some of the biggest fish ever caught was a 30-foot nursing shark, an 850-lb tuna and a 15 foot thresher shark. The Landing Restaurant and Bar currently occupies the “twine loft” where they made repairs to the nets and fishing gear.The Landing was established in 1978 as one of Newport’s few “harborside” dining establishments. From our decks overlooking historic Newport Harbor we boast “The best sunset in town”. Welcome!
